I took a look at one of the oldest and most reproduced salmon reels of all time, the serpentine "S" handled reel. I saw several major flaws to the system. First of all, there was no good way to palm or feather the reel spool. Secondly, having a fixed spool was neither convenient nor practical. The largest problem that I could see was that if the line would get bound up or fouled, how do you get the darn thing apart (and avoid sending it back to the factory)? I have seen designs that have 12 screws for break down and some with over 100 complex parts and almost every one being custom made and expensive and very easily lost or broken. Don't get me wrong - the makers out there seem to be making beautiful reels, but it seems as though the makers might not want to defy the laws of tradition. I, however, choose to take a different approach to reel making. My thought on the making of a good machine is that it should be simple and it must be utilitarian. A complex machine with too many working parts can be expensive, potentially confusing and thus, fail.
So after prototyping for 2 years, I am very proud to introduce "The Snake Roll". I believe it is the world's first true palmable "S" style spey reel with a single screw disassembly. I have addressed all of the problems listed above and then some. By having spool access, is easier to control the fish and since the spools are easily switched out, it is convenient for fishermen.
The handle is lasered from 306 stainless steel to precise dimension for smooth vibration and free function. It is then hand polished to a beautiful luster. The spools are machined from 6061 aluminium then Hard Coated for a life time of corrosion resistance.The cages are handpolished raw or clearcoated . The center pin and spool screw are stainless steel. The ball bearings are ABEC 7 and are made of stainless steel as well. Like always, the drag wire is made of nickle-titanium and the gears and pawls are cut from impact-resistant Stainless Steel The parts I have chosen are the very best I can find and are all custom machined in the U.S.
